Customer Data Platforms: Do You Need One?

What a customer data platform does, how it differs from a CRM or data warehouse, and how to decide whether to buy one, build on your warehouse, or wait.

Customer Data Platforms: Do You Need One?

Customers interact with your brand across websites, apps, stores, call centres, WhatsApp and email. Each system holds a piece of the picture. A customer data platform (CDP) brings those pieces together into unified customer profiles that marketing, sales and service can use.

What a CDP does

  • Collects events and data from many sources
  • Resolves identities so one person is one profile
  • Builds segments and audiences
  • Sends audiences and data to marketing, advertising and service tools
  • Manages consent and preferences

The composable alternative

Many companies now build "warehouse-native" CDPs: customer data is modelled in the data warehouse, and reverse-ETL tools push audiences to marketing platforms. This avoids duplicating data and suits teams with data engineering skills.

Do you need one?

You probably do if you have many customer touchpoints, a meaningful marketing budget, personalisation ambitions and data scattered across tools. You may not if you have a single channel and a simple CRM covers your needs.

Privacy

CDPs centralise personal data, so consent management and compliance with DPDP, UK GDPR, the UAE and Saudi PDPLs and US state laws are essential.

Getting started

Define three to five use cases first — for example, abandoned cart journeys, win-back campaigns and support personalisation — then choose the approach that delivers them.
