Generative AI

Generative AI vs Traditional AI: What Is the Difference?

How generative AI differs from traditional machine learning, what each is good at, and how businesses combine them for the best results.

Generative AI vs Traditional AI: What Is the Difference?

"AI" now covers everything from a fraud score to a chatbot that writes poetry. Understanding the two big families — traditional (predictive) AI and generative AI — helps you choose the right tool.

Traditional AI: predicting and classifying

Traditional machine learning learns patterns from historical, usually structured data to make predictions: will this customer churn, is this transaction fraudulent, how many units will we sell next week? Outputs are numbers, labels or rankings.

Strengths: accurate on well-defined problems, cheap to run, easy to measure and often explainable.

Generative AI: creating and understanding

Generative models, including large language models, learn from vast amounts of text, images or audio and produce new content: answers, summaries, drafts, code, images. They are also remarkably good at understanding unstructured inputs like emails and documents.

Strengths: flexible, works with little task-specific data, handles language and ambiguity.

Weaknesses: can be wrong confidently, harder to evaluate, higher running costs per task.

Better together

Many of our best systems combine both. A generative model reads a loan application's documents and extracts the facts; a traditional model scores the risk; a generative model drafts an explanation for the underwriter. Each does what it is best at.

Which do you need?

If you have a clear numeric prediction and good historical data, start with machine learning. If your challenge involves language, documents or knowledge, start with generative AI.
